Teaching round the tableEach autumn some Vale members run a course on behalf of Oxfordshire Area to teach the basics of navigation, how to plan an organised walk, and some advice on leading other people.

To make general enquiries, contact John Gordon on 01235 763667 or at ramblerscourse@jcgordon.plus.com.

Two students taking a bearingHere's a taster: Did you know that the dashes on the maps, be they smaller for footpaths or longer for bridleways, represent fixed lengths on the ground depending on the scale? Intrigued, want or need to find out more? Then come on the course and ask for the 30-50-70-90 rule to be explained!

Then again, you may wish to learn how to measure distance on the ground or for that matter how to take and follow a bearing. This is your golden opportunity!

What about some inside tips on how to handle a group on a walk, other than the obvious offering to buy the first round!
