Oxfordshire Area Ramblers

Footpath Volunteer Teams
The Area Executive Committee has agreed that teams of volunteers made up of Ramblers members should be set up to carry out work to maintain footpaths in the Oxfordshire Area. This is partly the result of reduced resources being allocated to the Countryside Service (CS) of the Oxfordshire County Council, and such assistance would expedite earlier resolution of footpath problems.

The teams of volunteers would work in close partnership with the CS. The CS would identify possible locations where this sort of work is necessary and there could be footpath problems at other locations which our own members could bring to the attention of the CS. The CS would undertake any necessary negotiation with relevant land-owners prior to the commencement of work.

Initially the work to be done would involve the cutting back of overhanging vegetation and/or undergrowth using hand tools. Later, after suitable training, assistance would be provided to repair or replace footpath furniture such as stiles, gates and signs.
Any work undertaken by the teams of volunteers would be covered by the National Ramblers Insurance Policy and team members would need to comply with relevant Health and Safety procedures followed by the County Council.

Ascott Park Historical Trail
The Ascott Park Historical Trail was set up by the Oxfordshire Buildings Trust in 2010. It passes through the long vanished estate of the Dormer family. They laid out the attractive parkland with fine avenues of trees and a dovecote and garden pavilion. There are also traces of the formal gardens, recently partly excavated, together with fishponds and the remains of a water garden. It all adds up to a very pleasant short walk which can be extended into a circular walk of about 2 miles, including the village of Stadhampton. Or see here.

The Oxfordshire 20-30s walking group site
Walks are open to everyone, although members of this group are all in their 20s or 30s.

The Oxfordshire Fieldpaths Society Website
The Oxford Fieldpaths Society organises a regular programme of social walks throughout the year ranging in distance from four to ten miles, and gentle to moderate in pace (approximately 2-2.5 miles per hour). We are also actively involved in working with local authorities and other bodies to ensure that the footpaths of Oxfordshire are adequately maintained and preserved.

The Walks in Oxford Website lists over 70 walks, from one mile to nine miles, suitable for all the family. Some walks are wheelchair- friendly. The website has been developed by three organisations with Oxford in their hearts: Oxford Civic Society, Oxford Pedestrians Association and Ramblers Oxford, with support from Oxford City Council.

Walking for health
