Bicester is a historic market town set in the agricultural landscape of north east Oxfordshire. Close by is the site of the Roman Town of Alchester. The present town was founded as a Mercian frontier fort on the border between Mercia and Wessex. In the 19th century, the area became famous for local horseracing and as good foxhunting country and a hundred years later it was better known for its military establishments.

Kidlington is the largest village in England having resisted all proposals to make it a town. It has a 13th century church and a farm and vicarage dating from 16th century.

Bicester & Kidlington are a friendly group of walkers whose aims are to enjoy the countryside and other peoples company while walking. We are conveniently situated for walks in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside with its beautiful villages and historic towns. Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire are close by and the Chiltern and Cotswold Hills are not far away.

Our volunteers organise a wide range of walks, from the easy to the demanding. Most walks are graded for difficulty. Many walks are all-day walks with breaks for a picnic or pub lunch, but there are also half-day and shorter walks. We normally walk on Saturdays with some during the week. A range of social activities supplement these. They include an annual barbecue, walking weekend away, quiz evening and theme walks.

We also endeavour to promote the benefits of walking, protect and maintain rights of way, increase access to open countryside and defend the beauty of the countryside.

Woodland Walk

The photos here are of our Woodland walk on 21 April in Stoke Wood. This was a joint event with the Woodland Trust. Their representative Paul, gave us a guided tour of the woods and pointed out conservation work done by the Trust. It was aimed at children who were given specimen bags to collect leaves, cones, flowers etc. The highlight was at the end when Paul engaged parents and children in some den building.

Bicester & Kidlington 75th anniversary baton walk
On Saturday 6 November, Bicester & Kidlington Group completed their section of the Oxfordshire Way. As part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations, Oxfordshire groups have been walking the Oxfordshire Way over several weekends. Bicester & Kidlington group met at Kirtlington to take over the Baton from Oxford group. They toasted 75 years with bubbly while they waited. They took the baton from Oxford and then cut the anniversary cake. The group then walked the next leg of the Oxfordshire Way to Islip, having left their cars there earlier.
